Here are a few from my Thanksgiving shoot. I was so looking forward to this! I've missed photographing newborns... I hadn't for awhile because of all the Christmas pictures and family pictures I've been doing lately!
I wanted to do a few SOC (straight out of the camera) pictures so you can see... newborns safety if top priority!!! Don't ever just stick a newborn in a tree or on a saddle and take a picture---one little noise and it could startle them, which will cause them to move and fall! SAFETY FIRST!!! Here is how we do it!

Every morning, I make breakfast for my family, get my son off to school and my husband off to work... I get my other son breakfast and let him watch a movie while I grab a cup of coffee, check and return emails, check FB and then I blog stock (for just 10 minutes or so). One of my favorite photography blogs is MCP Actions. It is a great place for photographers! If you've never seen Jodi's blog, you should! There are so many awesome tutorials, videos and freebies for photographers! This morning, she had an article or her FB page about taking pictures of YOU! Yes you! As a photographer, I rarely get my picture taken because I'm always the one with the camera. But that is how I want it! I always tell everyone, --That is why I'm the photographer, so I don't have to have my picture taken! Let's face it, I'm not getting any younger or skinnier! But what if something happened to me one day and my kids didn't have any pictures to remember me by? Pictures and memories are all you have after our loved ones are gone. And most of the time, when we look back on pictures, we remember what we were doing when we took that picture! Here is a picture of me with my kids from this past weekend.

When I see this picture again, I'm going to remember that it snowed 2 1/2 feet at our house that weekend and that we must have played in the snow 25 different times! We had some much fun sledding and riding the ranger together!

Is it a good picture of me? NO! I have no makeup on, I didn't photoshop out my wrinkles or fat. I've already put on my winter weight and it's technically not even winter yet, and I have extra clothes on to stay warm, which makes me look even fatter! But this is me! This is the way my family sees me! So I'm going to embrace it and enjoy my life with my family! Just remember to have someone take a picture of you too once in a while! :)

Sorry for the lack of posts again... but it's Christmas card session, which means I'm terribly busy! Here is one from yesterday's shoot!
Remember, it you are wanting to place a Christmas card, print order or an Organic Bloom order, the time is now! I will not be placing any more orders after the first week of December for Christmas cards, because they just won't get her in time unless you are willing to pay rush shipping. Organic Bloom orders---the last day is November22nd (unless you don't care that they will not be here until after Christmas). I did place the order for the Ornament frames, so if you are waiting one of those, hopefully they will be here next week! You can pick them up at the studio. Print orders can be placed any time, but if you want them in time for Christmas, please order before December 9th! Thanks! Have a great week!

We had a great time with this shoot! Mom and Dad both came to help this little one smile! :) Mom wanted outside pictures, so we started in the nice green grass to get this little guy comfortable with me.

Mom and Dad liked my little boat prop, but it just didn't look right in the grass! So we put it up, sad we weren't going to use it this time. As we moved on to other locations and other props, I heard something as we were walking... water! Mom and Dad said, ya, the creek was running when we came! PERFECT! The creek hasn't run all year and it picked today to run! So here is what we got!

I am a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Daughter, Sister & a Friend! I have four children, 28, 21 & 9 year old twins. Besides loving & enjoying time with family & friends, I enjoy coffee (a must have) music, scrapbooking, graphic design, a good glass of wine & of course PHOTOGRAPHY! I have been in love with photography for as long as I can remember. I got my first SLR in 2003 (a gift from my husband…yep, he ROCKS!) From then on, I have the camera wherever I go!

Well I have a lot of favorite moments but I have to say this was at the top of my list… when I put a tutu on little 3 year old Emily & she took off running through the park…forget about getting her picture taken, she wanted to dance in the tutu! Lol Needless to say we did get quite a few captures, but it was quite a challenge!

Most rewarding moment is when I had the pleasure photographing Ally (18 years old). She has a rare form of cancer known as Primitive neuro epithial tissue (P.N.E.T.) & is fighting for her life. She is such lovely young gal with spunk. Those moments with her & her family has touched my heart that is indescribable & will be a memory never forgotten.

Advice for Photographers who are starting out:

Know your camera! Practice on family & friends, read books & watch tutorials as much as you can. More important…HAVE FUN!!

Sorry for the delay in Feature Friday Photographers! It's been a crazy couple of weeks!

This week's Feature Photographer is

Here is a little about Susie:

I have grown up with a camera since I was young and was always editing and taking pictures! When college came around I was fighting trying to find my "niche." I took a digital photo class for fun and knew this was it! I decided to go after Graphic Design & took a bunch of photography classes as well! When I graduated, jobs were hard to find so I started my own business. The actual business end of it has been going on for about two years. However, it has not really took off until just recently. Being an army wife I couldn't be stable for sometime and just did it for fun, rather than make it a business. Now that my husband and I have settled in for sometime, I have been an actual business owner for a little over a year.

There is no single moment in my job that has been my favorite. I LOVE what I do and find that no matter what pictures I take, they are NEVER alike. Just recently I have been doing homecoming ceremonies for most of my sessions. I have noticed that each homecoming is SO different and unique.. I love to make sure to make sure my customers are satisfied and happy. When they can smile and really say they enjoy my work and come back, that is what makes my day and job!

I photograph all styles of photography. I think children are a challenge to this day.. You have got to be prepared and ready for anything that comes your way. Children can't really be "posed" since they move and don't understand the posing end. I really enjoy to do boudoir, that has been in demand lately as well. I love when my customers come back to me and tell me that their deployed husband loved the images!

Her advice for photographers:

You can NOT ever stop learning and growing. I look back a year ago and think that much of my work is not worth it. I made sure to delete those images off the site to my newer better ones! I still have a ton of learning and growing to do as a photographer and business owner, you can never know it all. A lot of my job is "self taught" but, I make sure to keep up with the new trends, traits etc. Just recently I went to a photographers convention at St Louis. A lot of the stuff I already knew, but it was fun to learn and teach other photographers there. It was good to refresh on all the ideas that I thought weren't important. ALWAYS LEARN. When you have down time, don't get discouraged you aren't getting bookings, look around and look how to make yourself better. Just always take pictures, always learn your camera settings. Join the photographers blogs and cafes that are online or on facebook!

Make sure you meet and are open to people all the time. You never know who you run into that might have an opportunity for you.. Marketing and advertising can be such a tough thing, but I use facebook to my advantage! Without facebook my business would be a loss. That is how my business actually started. I found pages that were around my area and just advertised! I make monthly events on facebook for people, send a monthly e-mail.. I post on my facebook page daily of my recent work, questions, thoughts etc. I communicate to my customers through facebook. I become a part of freebies and giveaways to attract more customers! Word of mouth is huge too, so ALWAYS make sure to satisfy the customer. Word of mouth goes a long way. You can not please everyone and there will be one bad apple here and there, but learn from it and move on. Don't take things to the heart; if you did the best you could take it with you and learn. Learning is the best advice as a business owner.

I admit I went about it the way most newbie photographers do, which is very much unprepared and more naive and idealistic than business-savvy, so in 2009 I folded "Parago Photography" only to reemerge in early 2011 with a better plan, a good and solid foundation knowledge as well as drive-wise and a complete make-over for the brand. I now operate as "angie ray - natural light maternity-, baby-, and child photographer" and I feel very much at home with my business identity and in a much better place than when I went by "Parago Photography - I take pictures of everything and anyone".

I started out doing pretty much anything people would pay me for; I did families, weddings, seniors, pets, babies, maternity, as well as boudoir-like shots - and very soon realized that that's way too much stuff on my plate as well as way too diverse a menu for my taste. My favorite thing to shoot is baby bellies as well as babies. I don't know what it is about those two areas that fascinate me, but it does. It's the two types of photography that give me a fuzzy feeling when post-processing and that make me feel the most accomplished at the end of the day.

Another thing I like about this type of photography is that, ideally, I get to make a real connection with my clients and one that lasts for more than just the duration of the shoot and the online duration of the client's gallery. Being part of a client's family from pregnancy into the first couple of months of their baby's life, and oftentimes beyond that, is something very special and something I crave and am proud of.

I believe that another reason I love maternity- and newborn- or baby photography so much is that, during those sessions I, as well as the client, get to experience a myriad of emotions; the whole spectrum really. There are very quiet and tender moments, very sweet shots that convey a sense of serenity and peace and bliss and then there are silly moments, funny shots, pictures that make you giggle and even laugh out loud. There are bittersweet moments that result in incredibly heartfelt and touching pictures and then there are the snapshots that capture what life is ultimately all about: spontaneity and the wonder of unexpected things. I love all that and I love to be able to create this experience for my clients.

Be patient. Always. Be patient with yourself, be patient with others, be patient with the process. And when you feel like you're running out of patience or your impatient little self is getting the better of you, stand back, close your eyes, go for a walk and.. breathe. Bring things back in perspective. And be patient all over again. You'll be fine. Oh and also: learn your camera inside and out before you learn how to purchase and apply actions. ;)

About Stacey:

I first got interested in photography in 2007 when my first daughter was born. I knew right away that my little Sony point & shoot wasn't cutting it, but couldn't afford to upgrade to anything fancy. So I stuck it out for several years until my brother purchased a Canon 40D. Oh man, I fell in love! I borrowed it over and over for about 6 months until my husband finally bought me my own in October 2009! Right away, I dug into research and learned Photoshop in the wee hours of the night while the kiddos slept. My friends then just started to ask me to take their family photos and the rest was history! I loved being a part of making their memories and just really enjoyed meeting new people and having fun with them!

I officially started business in February of this year and still have so much to learn! I have found that my real passion is photographing children. While I won't say "no" to photographing a family or a wedding, I'll keep my heart in children's portraiture. I just love making the kids smile and surprising mothers who didn't think it was possible to get a great shot!

What I've learned most in my short photographic journey thus far is that you can never know everything right now! I seriously stayed up WAY too late for months at a time and stressed out over being perfect from the first day I took my very first portrait. You aren't going to be an amazing photographer right away, it takes practice- and lots of it!

I'm pretty confident that my work is great, but I want it to be stunning so I'll keep my finger on that shutter!

Stacey is a natural light photographer in Chico, California and other nearby areas of Northern California.

I've been in business since last summer, when it seemed like everyone thought I was crazy for NOT being in business. I've loved photography since I was a kid, and got my first DSLR in 2005. It was an instant love affair, and I sucked up all the knowledge I could about photography. I had a perfect little model, my own daughter, and pretty much began photographing everyone I knew, whether they liked it or not. My family started to call me a "photo ninja" because I was always on the sidelines, taking photos when no one expected it.

My favorite moment as a photographer has to be, well, every moment. Every new client I have, I LOVE. Especially the families. They always jump right in, making silly faces at each other, snuggling, laughing. They're all my favorites.

I would call myself a lifestyle photographer. I definitely have a photo-journalistic style, and I do very little posing. I prefer to catch people as they are in that moment, which is a little challenging with clients at times, since we're all programmed to freeze up in front of the camera with "cheese" smiles. But, so far my clients have all been wonderful with this!

My biggest challenge as a photographer is the business portion, absolutely. Marketing, promoting, and networking are not my strong suits, resulting in a very small client base at this time. I try as hard as I can, but it just doesn't work! The clients I do have, though, are fantastic!

My advice for other photographers just starting out is practice, practice, practice! Learn your camera, find your style. I had the skill as a photographer long before I started charging people for my services, and it has benefited in many ways. All the potential clients that contact me know exactly what to expect of their sessions and completed photographs. It's unlikely that there will be negative surprises in the end, and if they want those posed photographs {which are often lovely, just not me!} they go elsewhere. It makes for wonderful photographer-client interaction, and very happy clients when they see the results!
